Agricultural multifunction oils

How to tell which category you need

The seven categories in this group cover entirely separate circuits and machines, and the products are not interchangeable between them. If you are working on the engine, go to engine oils and start from the approval in the service book, not from the viscosity grade — the grade follows from it, it is not the criterion. Manual gearboxes and axles have a category of their own, where the criterion is the API GL specification: GL-4 for gearboxes, GL-5 for hypoid axles, and the two do not substitute, because the EP additive that saves a hypoid pinion attacks bronze synchromesh. Automatic transmissions sit apart, on ATF, CVT or DCT fluids chosen on the transmission builder's specification rather than on the vehicle's badge. If the issue is the cooling circuit, coolant is chosen on inhibitor technology and approval, never on colour. Brake fluid is changed on time rather than on mileage, because it takes up moisture from the air and loses its boiling point. And the last two categories belong to the machine rather than to a circuit: agricultural multifunction oils replace several products with one on a tractor — transmission, hydraulics and wet brakes in a UTTO, and the engine as well in a STOU — while small-engine oils cover the two- and four-stroke engines on garden and forestry equipment, where the fuel mix and the saw chain call for products of their own. The most common mistake in this group happens at top-up, not at the oil change.
