On the face of it nothing — a boiler fluid, a transformer oil, a food-grade white oil, a marine cylinder oil, a biodegradable hydraulic fluid, a drum of bitumen and a tanker of diesel have little in common. What unites them is that in none of them is the primary criterion lubrication, and several are not lubricants at all. Heat transfer fluid carries heat and is judged on thermal stability. Transformer oil insulates electrically and is judged on moisture and dissolved gases. White oil reaches the finished product, directly or incidentally, so the criterion is compliance, checked at audit. Marine lubricant is chosen on the fuel burned, not on the engine. A biodegradable product has to demonstrate on paper what happens to it once it reaches the environment. Base oils are bought on API group and viscosity, waxes on melting point and oil content — raw material for whoever formulates or manufactures further down the line. Bitumen is chosen on penetration grade and delivered hot, so the question is as much about logistics as about the product. Fuels are judged on cetane number, cold weather behaviour and the cleanliness of the tank. And formwork release agents are chosen on the formwork and the concrete face you want, not on how well they lubricate. In all ten, a "better" product chosen on intuition is often the wrong one.
