In a hydraulic system the oil transmits force — that is the primary job, and lubrication comes after. The practical consequence is that the properties that matter are not those of a lubricating oil: compressibility and entrained air decide how precisely a cylinder positions, air release decides whether the pump makes noise, and rapid water separation decides whether the valve block rusts. Cleanliness has a unit of its own, the ISO 4406 class, and is responsible for most failures: an axial piston pump does not fail from "weak" oil but from particles a few microns across passing through the same clearances a thousand times an hour.
The classification comes from DIN 51524 and ISO 6743-4. HLP (DIN 51524-2) is mineral oil with anti-wear, antioxidant and anti-corrosion additives — the standard for fixed plant, where operating temperature is stable. HVLP (DIN 51524-3) adds a high viscosity index, so it varies less with temperature; it is the choice for mobile hydraulics that start at −15 °C and work at +80 °C in the same day. HLPD adds detergent-dispersant properties, useful where water and fine contamination get in. HFC fluids are water-glycol and fire-resistant, used in foundries, steelworks and mines, with limited working pressures and their own seal-compatibility requirements. The usual viscosity grades are ISO VG 32, 46 and 68 — 46 covers most applications in Romania.
