The products you apply rather than pour

This group gathers the lubricants that stay where you put them: they do not circulate, are not filtered and are not analysed, so there is no way to catch a wrong choice early. With greases the decisive criterion is not the NLGI grade, which describes consistency only, but base oil viscosity and thickener type — and mixing two incompatible thickeners can soften a grease until it runs out or harden it until it blocks. With anti-seize compounds the product changes thread friction, and so the tightening torque, and copper paste on stainless steel does exactly the opposite of what you wanted. With chains and ropes the only question that matters is whether the lubricant reaches the joint or the rope core; what stays on the outside looks right and does nothing.
