This category gathers total-loss products: they are applied, do their job, and stay where they were put. That changes the criteria compared with any closed system. On the railway, wheel-flange grease reduces curve wear and noise, but if it migrates onto the running surface it cuts adhesion exactly where braking happens — so quantity and application point matter as much as formulation. On chains the problem is the opposite: the lubricant has to penetrate the joint, between pin and bush, where the real wear happens, and then resist being flung off. And on wire ropes, the oil has to pass between the strands to the core, where corrosion starts unseen.
Wheel-flange and curve greases are chosen on operating temperature, tackiness and whether biodegradability is required; in tunnels and urban crossings biodegradable formulations are used, because the product ends up in stormwater. Top-of-rail friction modifiers are a completely separate category: their job is to bring friction into a controlled range, not to reduce it, and they do not substitute for flange grease. Chain lubricants divide by temperature — solvent-carried penetrating oils for ordinary conveyor chains, and residue-free synthetics for ovens and dryers, where a mineral oil would leave coke in the joint. Wire-rope greases are tacky products, often applied warm, with strong corrosion protection.
