The wet boiling point is the number that matters

Glycol-based fluids are hygroscopic: they take up moisture from the air through the hoses and the reservoir, and the water they gather lowers the temperature at which the fluid boils. A new fluid has a dry boiling point of 230-270 °C; the same fluid, two years into a car, is down at its wet boiling point, measured at 3.7% water — which is why that is the figure to read on the datasheet, not the first one. When the fluid boils locally, in the caliper, gas bubbles form and the pedal goes to the floor without braking: vapour lock. Hence the two-year change interval, which depends on time rather than on mileage.

The DOT classes, and the mineral fluids

DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are all glycol-ether based and are compatible with each other; they differ in boiling points and in cold viscosity, and DOT 5.1 is the most fluid when cold, which matters for how quickly ABS and ESP can act. DOT 4 Plus and the racing variants raise the dry boiling point with borate esters, for prolonged braking. The reference specifications are FMVSS 116, ISO 4925 and SAE J1703/J1704, on top of which the manufacturers add their own — FCA 9.55597, IVECO 18-1820, MB, MAN. The green mineral LHM fluids stand apart, for Citroën central hydraulic circuits and for some machines: they are not hygroscopic, but they must never be mixed with a glycol-based fluid — it attacks the seals and empties the system.

Handling rules everybody breaks

Brake fluid is the one product in this catalogue that degrades in the container as fast as it does in the car:

  • Do not keep an opened container. Once opened it takes up moisture from the air and should be used in the same job.
  • Never mix a mineral LHM fluid with a glycol-based one, in either direction and in any proportion.
  • Read the wet boiling point, not the dry one: that is the figure describing the fluid in the car two years from now.
  • Change the fluid on time, not on mileage — a car that sits takes up water as readily as one that is driven.
  • Protect the paint: glycol-based fluids attack lacquer, and washing it off with water at once is the only free repair.
