Manufacturer's description

Shell Tellus S3 M are high-performance hydraulic fluids based on a "zinc-free" formulation technology, to deliver outstanding protection and performance in most manufacturing operations and mobile equipment. They resist degradation caused by heat or mechanical stress, helping to prevent the deposits that can reduce hydraulic system efficiency.

Applications

  • Industrial and manufacturing hydraulic systemsShell Tellus S3 M fluids are suitable for industrial hydraulic systems and as power transmission fluids.
  • Hydraulic fluid maintenance under arduous conditionsThe long-term characteristics of Shell Tellus S3 M fluids can make them particularly suitable for applications operating under arduous conditions (e.g. load, temperature) or where a long service life is required (e.g. in remote or inaccessible locations).
  • Marine and mobile hydraulic systemsShell Tellus S3 M fluids are suitable for marine and mobile applications where ISO HM type hydraulic fluids are recommended.
  • Low toxicity towards the environmentShell Tellus S3 M fluids have a reduced environmental impact in the event of leaks or accidental spillage, compared with conventional zinc-based hydraulic fluids. This is possible thanks to the use of zinc-free anti-wear technology and low-sulphur oils. Shell Tellus S3 M is classified as "not harmful" to freshwater and marine invertebrates when tested as water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) in accordance with OECD and EPA test guidelines. For further reductions in environmental impact, we offer the Shell Naturelle range of environmentally acceptable lubricants. For applications with wide temperature variations, we recommend the Shell Tellus "V" series of hydraulic fluids.

Performance & benefits

  • Long service life – reduced maintenanceShell Tellus S3 M fluids offer an improved capability to extend fluid maintenance intervals and thereby reduce equipment downtime through: - An extended ASTM D943 TOST lifetime, with an oxidative stability designed for a minimum of 5,000 hours TOST life. - Excellent resistance to degradation in the presence of water and heat. These features provide extended maintenance capability without compromising protection or performance, even in applications under arduous conditions or at excessive temperatures.
  • Outstanding wear protectionThe zinc-free anti-wear additives provide protection across a wide range of operating conditions, including low-load and heavy-duty operation. This protection has been demonstrated in industry-standard tests such as the Denison T6H and Eaton Vickers 35VQ25 tests.
  • Maintaining system efficiencySuperior cleanliness and filterability, coupled with excellent water separation, air release and anti-foam characteristics, all contribute to maintaining and increasing hydraulic efficiency. The filterability of Shell Tellus S3 M is maintained even when the fluid is contaminated with water. Shell Tellus S3 M fluids have a superior degree of cleanliness, meeting the requirements of ISO 4406 21/19/16 or better, e.g. at Shell filling lines. As recognised by the DIN 51524 specification, the oil is exposed to various influences during transport and storage.

Standards & approvals

  • Parker Denison HF0/HF1/HF2

    Parker Denison HF-0, HF-1 and HF-2

The three Denison hydraulic fluid levels quoted together. An oil covering all three passes the vane pump and piston pump tests alike, including in the presence of water.

  • Eaton Vickers (Brochure 694)

Eaton Vickers Brochure 694 — fluid requirements

The Vickers brochure that set the classic requirements for hydraulic oils in vane and piston pumps: cleanliness, antiwear performance and thermal stability.

  • Fives Cincinnati P-70 (ISO 46)

Fives Cincinnati P-70 — ISO VG 46 hydraulic oil

An approval number from the Fives Cincinnati list of fluids for use in its own machine tools. Approved hydraulic fluids must pass its own wear, filterability and water separation tests, beyond the DIN 51524-2 level.

  • ISO 11158 (fluide HM)

Hydraulic oil, type H (fluide HM) — ISO 11158

The international standard for mineral hydraulic fluids; class HM is the antiwear oil, the ISO counterpart of DIN 51524-2 HLP.

  • DIN 51524-2 (uleiuri HLP)

Hydraulic oil (uleiuri HLP) — DIN 51524, part 2

Part 2 of the German hydraulic fluid standard: HLP oils — mineral oils with oxidation, corrosion and antiwear additives. It is the most widely quoted reference in industrial hydraulics.

  • ASTM 6158 (uleiuri minerale HM)

ASTM D6158, type HM — antiwear hydraulic oil

The American standard for mineral hydraulic oils of type HM, that is, oils with antiwear additives. It is the ASTM counterpart of DIN 51524-2 HLP and ISO 11158 HM.

  • SS 15 54 34 M

SS 15 54 34 — environmental requirements for hydraulic fluids (Sweden)

The Swedish standard requiring high biodegradability, low aquatic toxicity, and that the finished fluid not be classified as environmentally hazardous. It is required near groundwater and drinking water sources; verified products appear on the "SP list".
