Cat Extreme Application Grease 2 is formulated for grease fittings and lubrication points in high-load, high-speed applications. It uses a high-quality calcium sulfonate complex formula fortified with 5% molybdenum disulfide (moly) for long service life in Cat applications, resists washout from fresh and salt water, and resists softening to continue protecting parts under extreme loads and high speeds. It also resists oxidation, protecting metal against rust without corroding or damaging steel, copper bearing alloys or conventional seal materials. This NLGI grade 2 version is rated for operating temperatures from -15°C to +140°C (+5°F to +284°F). Typical values from the Cat technical data sheet include a mineral base oil with a viscosity of 150 mm²/s at 40°C (ASTM D445), a dropping point above 260°C (ASTM D2265), a 4-ball wear scar of 0.39 mm (ASTM D2266), a 4-ball weld load of 800 kg (ASTM D2596), a pass on rust prevention (ASTM D1743), 1A copper corrosion (ASTM D4048), and 0.6% mass water wash-out at 79°C (ASTM D1264). Cat's grease selection guide positions the NLGI 2 grade for high-load, high-speed working environments, alongside the softer NLGI 1 grade of the same grease (Cat Extreme Application Grease 1), which is rated from -20°C to +140°C.
