Cat Utility Grease is a lithium complex grease intended for low-load, low-speed applications where moisture conditions are low. It is presented by Caterpillar as an excellent general-purpose grease: it resists softening to protect parts from wear, and resists oxidation to protect metal against rust without corroding or damaging steel, copper bearing alloys or conventional seal materials. Unlike Cat's moly-fortified Extreme Application and Prime Application greases, Cat Utility Grease contains no molybdenum disulfide. It is an NLGI grade 2, blue grease built on a mineral base oil, rated for operating temperatures from -20°C to +140°C (-4°F to +284°F). Typical values from the Cat technical data sheet include a base oil viscosity of 220 mm²/s at 40°C (ASTM D445), a dropping point of 260°C (ASTM D2265), a 4-ball wear scar of 0.53 mm (ASTM D2266), a 4-ball weld load of 250 kg (ASTM D2596), a pass on rust prevention (ASTM D1743) and 1B copper corrosion (ASTM D4048). In Cat's grease selection guide, Cat Utility Grease is positioned for low-load, low-speed working environments, suiting general lubrication points that do not see the extreme loads or speeds the Extreme Application greases are built for.
