Manufacturer's description

High-performance synthetic industrial gear oil. Shell Omala S4 GXV 220 is a premium-quality synthetic industrial gear oil, approved by Flender, that delivers outstanding lubrication performance under severe operating conditions, including reduced friction, long service life and high resistance to micro-pitting, for optimum gear protection, and is compatible with sealing materials.

Applications

  • Shell Omala S4 GXV 220 is particularly recommended for certain systems where a very long service life is required, where maintenance is infrequent or where the systems are inaccessible. Excellent compatibility with seals, paints and sealing materials
  • Recommended for industrial reduction gears and gear units using a wide range of seals, including nitrile rubber and fluoroelastomers. Meets the requirements for Flender gearboxes and gear units.
  • Enclosed industrial gearsRecommended for industrial reduction gear systems operating under severe conditions, such as high load, very high or very low temperatures and wide temperature variations.
  • Other applicationsShell Omala S4 GXV 220 oils are suitable for lubricating gears and other lubrication systems using oil circulation or splash. For heavily loaded worm gears, the Shell Omala "W" series oils are recommended. For automotive hypoid gears, the appropriate Shell Spirax oil should be used. Specifications, approvals and recommendations: the product meets or exceeds the following industry standards:
  • The product is approved for: Flender – In accordance with the Flender T 7300 specification, Shell Omala S4 GXV 150-680 oils are approved by Flender for use in Flender gear units with helical, bevel, planetary and marine gears that are not fitted with multi-disc clutches.
  • ThyssenKruppFor the list of approvals and recommendations, please consult your Shell technical representative.
  • Gears and other inaccessible installations: Shell Omala S4 GXV 220 is particularly recommended for certain systems where a very long service life is required, where maintenance is infrequent or where the systems are inaccessible
  • Excellent compatibility with seals, paints and sealing materials: Recommended for industrial reduction gears and gear units using a wide range of seals, including nitrile rubber and fluoroelastomers. Meets the requirements for Flender gearboxes and gear units
  • ANSI/AGMA 9005. Typical physical properties: kinematic viscosity @40 °C mm2/s; kinematic viscosity @100 °C mm2/s; viscosity index; flash point (COC) °C minimum; pour point °C; density @15 °C kg/m3; four-ball EP weld load kg minimum; FZG load carrying test failure load stage; FZG Load Carrying Test A/8.3/90 modified failure load stage. These values may vary.

Standards & approvals

  • ISO 12925-1 Tip CKC

Industrial gear lubricant Tip CKC — ISO 12925

The international standard for enclosed gear drive lubricants; class CKC is the mineral oil with antioxidant, anticorrosion and antiwear additives, for moderate duty.

  • ISO 12925-1 CKD

Industrial gear lubricant CKD — ISO 12925

Class CKD of ISO 12925-1: a gear oil with the same additive package as CKC but greater thermal stability, for gear units running hot.

  • ISO 12925-1 Type CKSMP

Industrial gear lubricant Type CKSMP — ISO 12925

Class CKSMP: gear oils containing solid lubricants, for open or slow-running gears under very high loads.

  • DIN 51517-3 CLP

Industrial gear oil CLP — DIN 51517, part 3

Part 3 of the German lubricating oil standard: class CLP, gear oils with extreme-pressure additives. It requires an FZG pass plus corrosion and ageing protection.

  • DIN 51517-4 C LPX

Industrial gear oil C LPX — DIN 51517, part 4

Part 4, added for gear oils on synthetic bases (PAO, ester, polyglycol), with the same performance requirements as CLP but at higher temperatures.

  • ANSI/AGMA 9005

ANSI/AGMA 9005 — enclosed gear drive lubrication practice

The American standard guiding lubricant selection for enclosed industrial gear drives: viscosity by drive type, speed and temperature, plus the minimum performance requirements.

  • AIST (US Steel) Req. No. 224

AIST 224 (formerly U.S. Steel 224) — EP gear oil

The requirement for non-leaded extreme-pressure gear oils used in rolling mills and steel plant machinery. It demands high load-carrying capacity, thermal stability and good water separation.
