Shell Omala S4 WE is a high-performance synthetic oil for industrial worm gears, based on polyalkylene glycol and additives. It delivers outstanding lubrication under arduous operating conditions, improved energy efficiency, long service life and high resistance to micro-pitting.
Applications
Enclosed industrial worm gear systemsRecommended for industrial worm gear systems operating under arduous conditions, such as high load, very high or very low temperatures and wide temperature variations.
Extended-life systemsShell Omala S4 WE is particularly recommended for certain systems where maintenance is infrequent or where the systems are inaccessible (e.g. yaw drives on wind turbine installations).
Other applicationsShell Omala S4 WE oils are suitable for lubricating bearings and other components in oil-circulation and splash-lubricated systems. Shell Omala S4 WE is not recommended for lubricating components made from aluminium or aluminium alloys. For heavily loaded spur or helical gears, the Shell Omala "G" series oils are recommended. For automotive hypoid transmissions, Shell Spirax oil should be used.

Performance & benefits
Long service life – reduced maintenanceShell Omala S4 WE is formulated to offer excellent thermal and oxidation stability, extending lubricant life and providing high resistance to the formation of oxidation products at high operating temperatures. This helps maintain system cleanliness over extended maintenance periods. Shell Omala S4 WE offers the potential for significantly extended service intervals compared with conventional industrial gear oils.
Excellent wear protectionShell Omala S4 WE is formulated to provide a high level of load carrying capacity, giving long component life even under shock loading conditions. It also has high resistance to micro-pitting (grey staining). These features deliver benefits beyond mineral oil based products in terms of gear and bearing component life.
Maintaining system efficiencyShell Omala S4 WE delivers improved energy efficiency and lower operating temperatures in worm gear applications. Machine tests have shown efficiency improvements of up to 15% compared with mineral oil based products and 11% compared with other synthetic hydrocarbon lubricants. These results have been confirmed by OEM testing and field experience.
Standards & approvals
DIN 51517-3 CLP
Industrial gear oil CLP — DIN 51517, part 3
Part 3 of the German lubricating oil standard: class CLP, gear oils with extreme-pressure additives. It requires an FZG pass plus corrosion and ageing protection.
