Manufacturer's description

The Mobil Rarus 400 Series is a line of premium performance, ashless air compressor lubricants designed to meet the stringent requirements of major compressor manufacturers. Formulated with high-quality mineral base oils and a high-performance additive system, the series is engineered to protect compressors operating under mild to severe conditions, offering excellent wear protection and reduced maintenance costs by minimising equipment problems and downstream deposits and carryover. High FZG ratings make these oils outstanding lubricants for compressor systems with gears and bearings, suitable for both crankcase and cylinder lubrication. The series is recommended for single- and multistage air compressors, particularly for continuous high-temperature operation up to a maximum compressed air temperature of 220°C per DIN 51506, and is suitable for reciprocating and rotary machines, with the lower-viscosity grades mainly used in rotary compressors. It performs well in reciprocating air compressor crankcases and cylinders, rotary screw and rotary vane compressors, axial and centrifugal compressors, and systems with critical gears and bearings, in both stationary and mobile applications; it is compatible with the metals and mineral-oil-compatible elastomers used in compressor construction, but is not intended for breathing-air compressors. Outstanding oxidation and thermal stability extends service life while controlling sludge and deposits, and effective rust and corrosion protection enhances equipment life. The series meets or exceeds DIN 51506:1985-09 VDL and China GB/T 12691-2021 (L-DAB and L-DAH) requirements. It spans five ISO viscosity grades: Rarus 424 (ISO VG 32), 425 (ISO VG 46), 426 (ISO VG 68), 427 (ISO VG 100) and 429 (ISO VG 150), with viscosity indices of 100-105, sulfated ash below 0.01%, and flash points ranging from 236°C to 269°C across the grades.

Applications

  • The Mobil Rarus 400 Series oils are recommended for single and multistage air compressors. They are particularly effective for continuous high temperature operation. The maximum compressed air temperature, according to DIN 51506, is 220 °C. They are suitable for reciprocating and rotary type machines with the lower viscosity grades mainly used in rotary compressors. Rarus 400 Series oils are recommended for units with a history of excess oil degradation, poor valve performance or deposit formation. They are compatible with all metals used in compressor construction and with mineral-oil compatible elastomers used in seals, O-rings and gaskets. Mobil Rarus 400 Series oils are not intended or recommended for use in air compressors for breathing applications. The following types of compressors have shown excellent performance with the Mobil Rarus 400 Series oils: • Reciprocating air compressor crankcases and cylinders • Rotary screw compressors • Rotary vane compressors • Axial and centrifugal compressors • Compressor systems with critical gears and bearings • Compressors used in stationary and mobile applications
