Premium-quality industrial gear oils. Shell Omala F are premium-quality, lead-free extreme-pressure oils intended primarily for lubricating industrial gears subjected to severe loading. The combination of anti-friction characteristics and high load carrying capacity gives the oil superior performance in gears and other industrial applications. They are formulated from solvent-refined, high viscosity index base oils, with the inclusion of sulphur-phosphorus additives that deliver extreme-pressure performance significantly better than that offered by lead-containing oils.
Applications
Industrial gears where extreme-pressure (EP) properties are required
Shell Omala F oils must not be used in automotive hypoid gears. Shell Spirax should be used for these.
Shell does not recommend use in systems with fine filtration (<10 microns), because foam control cannot be sustained. Please consult your local Shell representative and product specialist.

Performance & benefits
Excellent load carrying and anti-friction characteristics
Reduces gear tooth and bearing wear on both steel and bronze components. The load carrying capacity of Shell Omala F oils, as determined by laboratory tests, is significantly better than that of leaded gear oils. Gear tooth wear is reduced, particularly under conditions of high load. Typical test results for Shell Omala F 220 are:
Extreme-pressure propertiesTimken wear and lubricant testing machine: IP 240 / ASTM D 2782 OK load lbs = 60 min
Four-ball extreme pressure testInitial seizure load kg IP 239/79 = 250 kg
Load carrying capacityFZG gear machine: IP 334 A/8.3/90 and A/16.6/90, failure load stage = >12
Excellent thermal and oxidation stabilityWithstands high thermal loading and resists the formation of sludge and other oxidation products. Long service life, even at bulk oil temperatures up to 100 0 C in certain applications.
Corrosion inhibitionThe oil provides corrosion protection for steel and bronze components, even in the presence of contamination by water or solids.
Resistance to micro-pittingStandard-setting anti micro-pitting performance, to reduce the risk of premature failure through surface distress.
Wide viscosity rangeMeets the requirements of the most varied and demanding industrial applications.
Lead-freeOperator acceptability. Reduced health risk.
Water separation propertiesShell Omala F has excellent water separation properties. Excess water can be drained easily from lubrication systems. (The presence of water in the system accelerates surface fatigue on gear and bearing contact surfaces and leads to corrosion on internal surfaces. Contamination of the oil with water should be avoided or removed as soon as possible after it occurs.)
Heater capacityThe capacity of heaters used to raise the bulk oil temperature must not exceed 11.5 KJ/m2 (7.5 W/in2).
Heater capacity
Oxidation stability sufficient for a service life of 10,000 hours at 80 °C
Passes the FVA-54/II micro-pitting (grey staining) test at load stage 10 at 90 0 C
Passes load stage 12 in the FZG double-speed test (DIN 51354 Part 2)
Gearboxes: Drain the gearbox completely and inspect the interior. Remove any deposits or sludge manually. Flush the gearbox with new oil. Drain and refill with the recommended Shell Omala F oil
