Manufacturer's description
Cat Open Gear Lubricant is a heavy duty, extreme pressure lubricant designed to protect the open gears used on electric rope shovels and draglines. Formulated from a select blend of high viscosity index base oils and semi-synthetic base fluids, it is designed to stay in place under extreme pressure and across a wide temperature range, delivering protection no matter the weather or working conditions. It is a high-viscosity semi-synthetic compound with solid anti-wear and extreme-pressure additives that protect the most heavily loaded zones of gear tooth mesh, and it resists wash-off in rain and snow. The product is available in two grades to suit different climates. This Cold Weather grade is recommended for ambient temperatures from -40°F (-40°C) to 50°F (10°C). It is a black, viscous semi-fluid with a specific gravity of 1.03, a flash point of 300°F (149°C), and a base oil viscosity of 50,000 cSt at 40°C. Typical values from the Cat technical data sheet include a 4-ball EP weld point of 620 kg (diluted, finished) and over 800 kg (non-diluted, unfinished), a 4-ball wear scar of 0.50 mm, a pass on the rust test, 1A copper strip corrosion, and a Ventmeter result of <150 seconds at -30°F. The companion Warm Weather grade, recommended for 20°F (-7°C) to 120°F (49°C), shares the same base characteristics but differs in specific gravity, flash point, wear scar and Ventmeter result.
