Manufacturer's description

AeroShell W oils were the first ashless dispersant oils to be used in aircraft piston engines. They are a blend of non-metallic additives and a high viscosity index base oil, to deliver exceptional stability and dispersant and anti-foam performance. These additives leave no metallic ash residues, which can lead to deposit formation in combustion chambers and on spark plugs, which in turn can cause pre-ignition and possible engine failure.

Applications

  • AeroShell W oils are available in four different viscosity grades:
  • AeroShell Oil W65 - AeroShell Oil W80 - AeroShell Oil W100 - AeroShell Oil W120. The suffix for each grade corresponds to the oil's viscosity at 210 0 F in Saybolt Universal Seconds (SSU).
  • AeroShell W oils are intended for use in engines certified for four-stroke (four-cycle) piston applications, including fuel-injected and turbocharged engines. AeroShell W oils are not recommended for use in automotive engines. For automotive engines converted for aircraft use, you should consult the engine manufacturer or the conversion agency for the appropriate oil recommendations.
  • Most radial engine operators use AeroShell Oil W120 in hot-weather operations, and AeroShell Oil W100 or AeroShell Oil W 15W-50 for use at lower ambient temperatures.
  • AeroShell Oil W100 or AeroShell Oil W 15W-50 are common choices for most operators of Lycoming and Continental flat engines, but in the colder periods of the year, the use of AeroShell Oil W80 instead of AeroShell Oil W100 would be a choice
  • Although some aircraft engine manufacturers and builders/overhaul agencies suggest in their service bulletins the use of a straight mineral oil in new or recently overhauled engines, other builders or manufacturers — particularly for engines such as the Lycoming O-320H and O/LO360E — permit either ashless dispersant or mineral oil for break-in, while ashless dispersant oils are mandated for break-in on all turbocharged Lycoming engines. Operators should check with the engine manufacturers or builders for the correct recommendations for particular engine types and applications.
  • The suffix for each grade corresponds to the oil's viscosity at 210 °F in Saybolt Universal Seconds (SSU)

Performance & benefits

  • Promotes engine cleanliness
  • Helps keep engines clean and free of sludge
  • Helps engines reach TBO (time between overhauls)
  • Protects heavily stressed engine parts against scuffing and wear
  • Helps reduce oil consumption
  • Although it was planned to replace the British DERD 2450 specification with the DEF STAN specification, this was put on hold and the SAE specification was adopted instead

Standards & approvals
